Top 3 Beauty Trends: Summer 2020

Article 2

May 12, 2020

Dear Little Magazine Enthusiast,

Welcome! This is Article 2. So happy you’re here. If you’re ADD like me, let me sum up how this article is laid out so you know how best to focus your time here:

  • Context for this post: I picked these 3 looks after scouring the “Best-of’s," and these are:

    • The most [fun + realistic] to execute

    • The most [cheeky + cute] universally (which is always a Le Kitsune prerequisite)= All ages, skin tones, genders, etc.

  • The 3 Looks are organized from easiest-to-hardest, left to right.

  • They are also more time-consuming, respectively.

  • All 3 looks are equally fun, however. Enjoy!

Heads up: There’s an extended excerpt on the Evolution of Red Lipstick at the end of this Article that’s worth the read when you have time.

1.Glitter 24/7

411: I. Love. Glitter. It’s about time glitter got its moment in the universal spotlight and not just in the hearts of teenie-boppers, drag-queens, and, well, me.

IRL application: Have fun with it! That’s the whole point. Don’t be scared. Glitter is good for the soul. It’s scientifically proven (j/k but it should be). I love the idea of using a few (like literally, 3-5 pieces of glitter) well-placed chunky pieces of glitter across the nose bridge or on the cheeks as “freckles.”

  • Extra Credit: Scroll down to “FYI” for a couple interesting articles on glitter.

Where to get it: This hue from Urban Decay, “Saturday Stardust,” is flattering for any skin type and undertone. I hope to bathe in it one day.

Caveat: Glitter gets everywhere. (I personally don’t mind it.) If you do, though, place the product on a separate disposable piece of paper or plastic, and use tweezers to apply. Always use oil to remove, gently.

FYI:

And they thought Glitter was just for the sillies…

Not that I need to, but, just for funskies I shall substantiate the importance of glitter as a phenomenon that’s worth talking about for all of time. Here are a couple of speculative articles from a couple well-known news sources/publications that you might have heard of. Take a gander, if it tickles your fancy:

2.Watercolor Lids

411: This is a very doable and incredibly pretty look for anyone of all ages. That’s why I went with this look for Top 3. Chances are you can use a blush you already have in your stash, but jic you need an excuse to go retail-therapy this situation, scroll down for “where to get it.”

IRL application: Again, don’t overthink this. The look is inherently soft, sheer, and the point is to actually see color on your lids, my dear makeup shy-pies. If you’re not used to wearing color, just make sure you don’t choose a shadow that’s super pigmented (aka has high color concentration).

  • Tip: After applying eyeshadow, look straight-on in the mirror as if you’re talking to yourself (vs. chin up). If you don’t see color, the point was lost. Bring it up and out past your natural eye-line.

Where to get it: This Palette from Chanel in “Tisse Paris” is perfect for this look. It’s also grounded enough to wear IRL for other occasions, too, not just in this trending moment (no offense turquoise eyeshadow). FYI- flattering for all complexions, too. Went with Chanel not just bc we all want an excuse to buy Chanel, but bc Chanel’s eyeshadows are modestly pigmented (and beautifully milled with fine glitter for all ages) so that the novice makeup wearer can half-hazardly swipe your finger across the shadow and onto your lid, and voila! You’ve achieved this season’s trending look.

Caveat: Don’t add water to your shadow! …unless you’re intentionally going for a saturated, highly-pigmented look. This concentrates the color and actually seals itself, making it difficult to blend and remove.

3. Red Lips

411: Red lips will never go out of style! But- here’s the 411 on which type of red lip you should wear this season. Make sure it’s:

  1. Matte.

  2. Neon. (aka BRIGHT)

How do you do the latter? Easy, make sure it’s an Orange-Red, like NARS in “Famous Red.” The orange will brighten up the red and eliminate any concerns about selecting the “right” shade of red for you, bc orange is a universally flattering tone. It also makes your red lip look intentional (and well-selected). The NARS chubby stick also makes for easier application.

  • Pro-Tip: Only have a blue-red lipstick shade? If you have a pigmented, bright orange blush or eyeshadow, blot your lips after applying the red lipstick, then pat/pack on the orange powder on top for an instant update and transition into this look. (Pure orange pigments work great, too!)

IRL application: Red and Matte means you need to PREP your lips! Both will otherwise highlight dry, flaky lips. I suggest the following lip-prep sandwich:

Moisturize, exfoliate, moisturize.

The Goods: call me old-school, but good ol’ Blistex is my go-to. It’s hydration that penetrates. So:

  1. Apply Blistex, wait a few minutes.

  2. Exfoliate lips (sugar + honey mix works)- gently rub in circular motions with your finger. Rinse. Pat dry.

  3. Apply Blistex again, gently blot. Now you’re ready for your Red lips! Yes, it’s a bit of work but it’s worth it.

Bonus Tip: Slightly over-apply on your top lip, and under-apply on your bottom lip*. (Translation: Go past your natural line on your upper lip, and stay within your natural line on your bottom lip.) Insta-pout. No filler needed. Yer welcome.

*Let’s stay within the corners, though. We’re not going for a joker look here.

Where to get it: NARS “Famous Red” is a winner-winner-chicken-dinner for everyone. Flattering on everyone, anywhere, anytime. It’s like a pair of your go-to jeans. Don’t overthink it. (Just keep the rest of your face to a minimum.)

I implore you: DO prep your lips. DO blot and reapply at least twice, like this:

  • apply one layer, gently blot on tissue.

  • Reapply second layer, gently blot. Now you’re done.

High-five! YOU DID IT!

  • Red Lipstick was a symbol of the Suffragettes circa early 1900s.

  • Red Lipstick has had a variety of implications throughout history but it has always had an indisputable cultural significance, a sort of “societal zeitgeist.”

    • used by the elite in Ancient Egypt

    • used by prostitutes in Ancient Greece

    • until early 20th century, seen as devilish and worn by “dubious, heretical women”

  • Elizabeth Arden, a supporter of the movement, empowered the American Suffragettes by handing out red lipstick and later was commissioned by the American government to designate the regulated colors worn by serving women.

  • The American Suffrage movement eventually picked up internationally and the Red Lip became a symbol of solidarity.

  • Hitler famously hated Red Lipstick.

  • In 1941, Red Lipstick was mandatory for women who joined the army.

  • In politically-charged scenarios, the Red Lip symbolized patriotism, rebellion and self-confidence.

  • In North Korea, Red Lipstick is prohibited.
